I have been contemplating this a lot lately. I meet so many people who are absorbed by the THINGS of life and as a result find that they are somewhat completely absorbed by these things. What are THINGS? Well.... relationships, jobs, conversations, opinions, fears, emotions, people and the list goes on. The THING of life is that which we label in our own mind and give it so much of our energy that it takes on an identity in our world. We talk about it, think about it and identify with it as a thing.
Life as I understand it in my own simple wisdom, is activity. It is momentum, movement, active, constantly changing and shifting directions. Life permeates and has a continuem of beingness. The minute we try to lock life down, isolate it, separate it or make it a thing is the moment we actually lose touch with its momentum. For a minute lets look at how THINGS become things.
We are born and enter this world somewhat new with the foundation for greater being. Life is so simple for a while, driven by needs & appetites we are sustained and loved to a greater or lesser degree depending on our parens andl upbringing. As we then grow our needs and appetites evolve and depending on our innate wisdom and intelligence, and the support and love that sustains us in our early years, we find ourselves with differing needs to possess, grasp, own, identify and attach ourselves to the activity of life. Our needs and appetites, our fears and insecurities bred from the 'LACK OFS' in our lives creates the culture and possibilities of THINGS. Our 'lack ofs' lesser our presense in the world and grow our attachments to THINGS. Little do we know that life has a momentum or a being beyond anything we can imagine and rationalise.
HPB Blavatsky says it so well:
"An omnipresent, eternal, boundless, and immutable principle on which all speculation is impossible exists, since it transcends the power of human conception and could only be dwarfed by any human expression or similitude. It is beyond the range and reach of thought, it is unthinkable and unspeakable. It is infinite being beyond all thought or speculation."
HPB captures a taste of life in its infinite spirituality with these words and gives us momentary nourishment of appreciating the depth of living without attachment and essentially without the THINGS of life. Even when we believe we own a thing it is never really ours to have. All THINGS will pass and the greater our attachment the more personal the pain we will feel of its passing.
I always find resolve and peace in the actions of nature in this regard. I watch the way nature nourishes, strengthens, nurtures and fertilises its many diverse and boundless manifestations, whether we are talking about the life of a tree, a plant or a person. The seasons change whether being the seasons of Summer, Winter, Autumn & Spring or whether the seasons of our developing life from chldhood to adulthood, to old age and death. Everything changes and this seasonal tide of change manifests into all activity of living. Dont just take my word for it, The truth of it lays in your own experience, reflect for a moment on as many THINGS of life as you can and you will see that NOTHING has stayed exactly the same, in some way greater or smaller the THING has changed.
To take this conversation to another level we should discuss permenance and impermanence. There are deep discourses written about this by a number of others so I wont lesser the greatness of this with my humbleness though I will make brief mention of it as it ties into my thoughts. There are some principles or lets say energies that outlive a lifetime and are constantly relevant to every age. Love is timeless, Peace is timeless, Human compassion is an expression that will go the distance of human existence, Space is boundless, living organisms such as human beings, animals and other life forms are a living miracle of being beyond explanation. The life form is impermanent but the fact that life sustaining organisms continue to abound is permanenent.
There is a self sustaining presence and life sustaining principle that maintains all life into being. Our closest link to knowing a fragment of this is by our awareness and our consciousness. We see, feel, smell, hear and taste through our senses though we are able to percieve through our awareness and understand through our consciousness. We are able to know the wonderment of being by nature of all that is beyond the THINGS of life. The second we truely know this activity of living in our own hearts and are able to percieve its brilliance in any given space, then we know from our core what its like to live a deep and fulfilling moment, in a away its like being touched by the finger of the divine. As these moments compound within us we see that we are looking at the world once again through the eyes of a child, an adult child or maybe a child of the universe but nevertheless by the simplicity of a childs perception. And for one lasting moment we come to know a degree of self mastery.
Getting back to topic though, throughout the momentum of life whether moving forward, back, in and out or whether inert and outwardly motionless, its that which we engage with that absorbs our energies. If we engage with the activity of living we find ourselves on the slipstream of living, being constantly reinvigorated by a boundless flow: though when we engage with the THINGS of life we start to expend without renewal the energies of living. Our physical energies begin to deplete, emotions evolve from the depletion of our human vital resources, our health suffers. The affects we have in our world and with others become less than helpful and possibly harmful if left unchecked for too long. It starts in little waves but surely enough it eventually becomes immediate. We can become lost in a jungle of THINGS draining our energies by our engagement to them and before we know it we have forgotten what makes life worth living, what sustains us and we become ignorant of the consciousness that enables us to really know ourselves. We become separate to rather than a part of life because we are so absorbed in so many ways by these many THINGS.
If you are asking yourself how do I make my life better, how do I get out of this rut or problem or anything else that preocupies you to the extent that you lose touch with your own happiness and fulfillment. Then I would say look beyond your THINGS, look at the momentum of your life, take hold of the rudder and navigate yourself into clearer waters. Take charge of your life in ways that you have never done before.
All this talk on things makes me want to sleep...night night
